Plan Your Trip

Rent a Car & Drive Free

Pacific Coast Highway is perfect for a classic American road-trip. Rent an economy sedan ($40-60/day) or convertible for scenic impact. Leave Los Angeles mid-morning to avoid traffic; drive at a leisurely pace with frequent stops at viewpoints (Big Sur is a must-stop). Fuel is readily available ($3-4/gallon). Parking in coastal towns can be pricey ($10-20/day); park outside downtown areas. Road conditions are excellent; watch for landslides on Big Sur during winter. No tolls on California 1, but some coastal parking lots require payment. Bring sunscreen; the Pacific coast sun is intense even on cool days. Romantic scenic spots: Julia Creek, McWay Falls, Hearst Castle. Best to complete this drive in 3-4 days minimum for full enjoyment.
