Plan Your Trip

Rent a Car & Drive Free

Iceland Ring Road demands a 4WD rental (€60-120/day); regular cars are prohibited on F-roads. Book 4-6 weeks ahead during summer. Key rental tips: check road conditions daily (road.is for real-time updates), refuel frequently (services are sparse), inspect the car for damage before departing (rental companies are strict), and understand water ford crossings on F-roads. Driving on the RIGHT side feels normal for most. Fill fuel tank whenever below half-full; some stations are 100km+ apart. Speed limits are enforced; locals drive carefully on gravel. Comprehensive insurance is essential ($25-40/day extra). Parking is free except in Reykjavik. Summer (June-August) offers near 24-hour daylight; plan drives accordingly. Winter (Nov-April) roads are icy; not recommended for inexperienced drivers.
