Rent a Car & Drive Free

Japan Tokyo to Kyoto is NOT recommended for self-driving. Japan's shinkansen (bullet train) is the ideal solution: 2h 15min, frequent departures, perfect timing. Rental cars cost $60-100/day and most tourists find navigation challenging due to Japanese road signs, complex parking systems, and tight urban streets. However, if you rent: reserve through major companies (Orix, Times, Toyota), rent from airports for English support, use a portable Wi-Fi router for GPS (Google Maps works well offline downloaded). Shinkansen (JR Pass if multiple trips) is faster, cheaper ($120-280), and stress-free. Within cities use train/subway systems; they're excellent, frequent, and cheap ($1.5-3 per ride). For countryside exploration (Hakone, Kanazawa), car rental makes sense, but Tokyo-Kyoto corridor strongly favor trains. Right-hand driving, left-side sitting position may confuse first-time renters.
