Suitable For secondary Tokyo-Kyoto inspiration, budget travelers, first-time visitors
Quick Tips
  • Secondary article only
  • Use new 10-day Shinkansen route as Japan backbone
  • JR Pass is only 7 14 or 21 days
  • Ordinary JR Pass prices are JPY 50000 80000 100000
  • International Tourist Tax is JPY 3000 from July 1 2026

Japan Travel Guide 2025 has been reviewed for the Japan sample-chain rebuild. It should no longer function as the primary sample-chain article because the stronger backbone is now the 10-day Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka Shinkansen route. This page is retained only as a lighter Tokyo-Kyoto budget and hidden-gems guide, with outdated rail-pass language removed.

What Changed in This Review

  • Removed the incorrect "10-day pass 44,810 JPY" style guidance.
  • Replaced old JR Pass advice with the official 7, 14 and 21-day structure.
  • Added the updated JPY 3,000 International Tourist Tax note.
  • Clarified that Tokyo-Kyoto alone often does not justify a nationwide JR Pass after the price increase.
  • Marked this guide as secondary to the new national sample-chain route.

Updated Rail and Tax Notes

The official nationwide Japan Rail Pass is sold for 7, 14 and 21 days only. Ordinary adult prices are JPY 50,000, JPY 80,000 and JPY 100,000. A simple Tokyo-Kyoto itinerary should be checked against individual Shinkansen tickets before buying a pass.

Japan's International Tourist Tax is JPY 3,000 per departure from Japan from July 1, 2026. The previous JPY 1,000 rate can still apply under the official transitional rule for eligible tickets issued on or before June 30, 2026.

Do not use this article as the Japan country hero or the main first-timer route. Use it as a secondary Tokyo-Kyoto inspiration page only. The main sample chain should point to:

Editorial Verification Notes

Reviewed against official JNTO/Japan Travel JR Pass guidance, National Tax Agency and JNTO International Tourist Tax pages, and the new Japan sample-chain structure requested in TOU-4375. Quality level: secondary retained article, not a premium sample-chain backbone.

Rent a Car in Japan

A rental car is not recommended for the Tokyo-Kyoto corridor. Use Shinkansen, local rail, IC cards and luggage forwarding; consider a car only for separate rural extensions such as Hokkaido or selected countryside routes.
