Meiji Shrine
Meiji Shrine (Meiji Jingū) is Tokyo's most important Shinto shrine, a forested 700,000 sq meter sanctuary in the heart of the city dedicated to the spirits of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shōken. Over 100,000 trees donated from across Japan were planted to create an artificial forest that now feels ancient and primeval, providing an extraordinary escape from the surrounding Harajuku and Shinjuku neighborhoods. The shrine's New Year celebrations attract the largest crowds of any shrine in Japan.
