Guimaraes Castle

Guimaraes Castle

Guimarães Castle (Castelo de Guimarães) is the birthplace of Portugal, an 11th-century hilltop fortress where Alfonso I, the first King of Portugal, was born in 1109. The medieval castle with its massive towers, battlements, and courtyard has been carefully restored and is one of Portugal's best-preserved medieval fortifications. The UNESCO-listed historic center below the castle is a remarkably intact medieval town that preserves the atmosphere of medieval Portugal's founding capital.
