Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar
The Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar in Barcelona's El Born district is one of the finest Gothic churches in Catalonia, built between 1329 and 1383 entirely by the contributions of the local fishermen and merchants of the Ribera neighborhood. Its austere, soaring interior — three aisles of equal height, slender octagonal columns, and extraordinary stained glass — exemplifies the Catalan Gothic ideal of light and space. The church's construction was a community act whose spirit makes it perhaps Barcelona's most beloved religious building.
