Royal Mile
The Royal Mile is Edinburgh's historic spine, a series of ancient streets running exactly one Scottish mile downhill from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Lined with tenements (closes), museums, whisky shops, tartan boutiques, and street performers, it passes through the medieval Old Town that is part of Edinburgh's UNESCO World Heritage Site. During August the Royal Mile transforms into the world's largest arts street festival, the Edinburgh Fringe.
