Temple of Literature

The Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu-Quốc Tử Giám) is Hanoi's oldest surviving architecture, a serene Confucian temple complex founded in 1070 by Emperor Lý Thánh Tông in honor of Confucius. The adjacent Imperial Academy, established in 1076, was Vietnam's first national university, training Confucian scholars and government officials. The complex's 82 stone steles inscribed with the names and birthplaces of successful doctoral candidates between 1442-1779 are recognized by UNESCO as Documentary Heritage. A tranquil oasis amid Hanoi's bustle, it remains an active place of study and cultural pilgrimage.
