Doi Suthep
Doi Suthep is Chiang Mai's guardian mountain and most sacred landmark, its summit crowned by the magnificent Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a gold-plated stupa visible from much of the city below. According to legend, a relic of the Buddha was placed on a white elephant which wandered the mountain until it chose the summit as its resting place, upon which the first shrine was built in 1383. The 306 steps of the Naga staircase lead pilgrims up to the temple complex, where panoramic views of Chiang Mai and the Ping River valley unfold.
