Die Al-Qarawiyyin-Universität in Fes, Marokko, wird von der UNESCO und dem Guinness-Buch der Rekorde als die älteste bestehende und fortwährend betriebene Universität der Welt anerkannt und wurde 859 n. Chr. von Fatima al-Fihri, einer muslimischen Frau, gegründet.
