Marrakech

Bahia Palace in Marrakech is a 19th-century palace complex built for Si Moussa, the Grand Vizier of the Sultan, and later expanded by his son Ba Ahmed. Its sequence of courtyards, gardens, and 160 lavishly decorated rooms showcase the finest traditional Moroccan craftsmanship — carved stucco, painted cedarwood ceilings, zellij tilework, and mosaic fountains. The palace's name means Beautiful or Brilliant, and its intimate maze of spaces fulfills that promise.

Djemaa el-Fna is Marrakech's legendary central square and one of the world's great urban gathering places, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. By day it fills with snake charmers, fortune tellers, and henna artists; by evening it transforms into an outdoor carnival with hundreds of food stalls, musicians, and storytellers. The sensory experience has enchanted travelers for centuries and remains the beating heart of Morocco's most visited city.

Jemaa el-Fnaa is Marrakech's legendary main square and marketplace, listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage site. By day it buzzes with orange juice vendors, snake charmers, and henna artists; after dark it transforms into a vast open-air theater of storytellers, musicians, and food stalls. The square has been the beating heart of Marrakech for over a millennium.

Koutoubia Mosque is Marrakech's most important and largest mosque, a 12th-century Almohad masterpiece whose 70-meter minaret has served as the architectural model for the Hassan Tower in Rabat and Seville's Giralda. The tower's elegantly proportioned arched windows, decorative tile bands, and carved stucco were the gold standard of Moroccan religious architecture. Non-Muslims may not enter the mosque but can admire the minaret and surrounding rose gardens.

Majorelle Garden is one of Marrakech's most enchanting and visited attractions, a botanical garden and artist's landscape created by French painter Jacques Majorelle over almost 40 years from 1924. The garden is famous for its vivid cobalt blue villa — now housing the Berber Museum — surrounded by lush exotic plants, bamboo groves, and cactus beds. It was acquired, restored, and saved from a real estate development by fashion designers Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé in 1980, and Saint Laurent's ashes are scattered in the garden's rose garden.

The Saadian Tombs in Marrakech are a magnificent 16th-century royal necropolis housing the remains of the Saadian dynasty's sultans and family members. Sealed for centuries and only rediscovered in 1917, the tombs feature breathtaking Hispano-Moorish architecture with intricate carved cedar wood, delicate stucco plasterwork, and colorful zellij tilework. The main chamber of the Hall of the Twelve Columns is considered one of Morocco's finest examples of Islamic art.
