Zao Onsen Hot Spring
Zao Onsen is a premier hot spring resort town in Yamagata Prefecture on the slopes of the Zao volcanic mountain range, celebrated for its highly acidic sulfurous waters and the extraordinary phenomenon of 'snow monsters' (juhyo) in winter. The sulfuric waters, among the most acidic in Japan, are prized for skin beautifying properties and flow into public outdoor baths with spectacular mountain views. Each winter, ice and snow encrust the trees on Mt. Zao into ghostly humanoid shapes, drawing visitors for both skiing and the otherworldly landscape.
