Vatican Museums

The Vatican Museums are a complex of papal palaces and chapels in Vatican City housing one of the world's greatest art collections, accumulated by the Catholic Church over five centuries. The collection's crown jewels are the Raphael Rooms — four chambers decorated by Raphael for Pope Julius II — and the Sistine Chapel, whose ceiling and altar wall were painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1541. With over 6 million visitors per year, the Vatican Museums rank among the world's most visited cultural institutions.
