Ryoan-ji Temple
Ryoan-ji Temple in Kyoto is famous for its enigmatic rock garden, widely considered one of the finest examples of kare-sansui (dry landscape) garden art. Fifteen stones of varying sizes are arranged in a rectangular bed of carefully raked white gravel, carefully positioned so that only 14 stones are visible from any single vantage point along the verandah. The meaning of the garden's composition remains deliberately ambiguous, inviting meditation — it has been interpreted as islands in the sea, tigers crossing a river, or simply an exercise in Zen aesthetic perfection.
