Pena Palace

Pena Palace

Pena Palace is the most spectacular of Portugal's palaces, a wildly romantic 19th-century Romanticist confection of turrets, towers, and battlements perched atop a forested hill in Sintra, 40 km from Lisbon. Built by King Ferdinand II from 1842-1854 as a summer royal residence, its candy-colored facades and eclectic blend of Moorish, Gothic, Renaissance, and Manueline styles are deliberately theatrical. The palace and its surrounding Cultural Landscape of Sintra are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Portugal's most visited attractions.
