Nijo Castle
Nijo Castle is a stunning 17th-century flatland castle in Kyoto, built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Edo shogunate. The castle is renowned for its 'nightingale floors' — specially constructed floorboards that squeak as footsteps press down on metal clamps, serving as a security alarm against intruders. The Ninomaru Palace with its elaborate decorative paintings is a masterpiece of Momoyama art, and the castle grounds bloom magnificently with cherry blossoms in spring.
