Kakunodate Samurai District
Kakunodate, often called the 'Little Kyoto of Tohoku,' preserves one of Japan's most intact samurai residential districts. Along its tree-lined streets stand elegant buke-yashiki (samurai mansions) with black-walled earthen storehouses, many of which are open to visitors as museums. The district is particularly spectacular in spring when weeping cherry blossoms arch over the samurai quarter, creating a timeless scene from Japan's feudal past.
