Fushimi Inari
Fushimi Inari Taisha is Kyoto's most iconic Shinto shrine and one of Japan's most photographed sights, famous for its seemingly endless tunnel of thousands of vermilion torii gates winding up the wooded flanks of Mount Inari. Dedicated to Inari, the god of rice and commerce, the shrine complex covers the entire mountain and takes 2-4 hours to walk to the summit. Starting the hike before dawn or after dusk, when the lanterns are lit and crowds thin, transforms the experience into something magical.
