Chaka Salt Lake
Chaka Salt Lake (Chaka Yanhu) in Qinghai Province is China's most photogenic salt flat, a shallow brine lake at 3,059 meters elevation whose salt crust and thin film of water create perfect mirror reflections of the sky, clouds, and surrounding mountains. Covering 105 sq km, the lake produces the extraordinary visual effect of visitors appearing to walk on the sky. Miniature trains still transport salt through the lake, adding industrial texture to an ethereal landscape.
