Berat Castle
Berat Castle (Kalaja) is a remarkably preserved medieval fortress crowning the hilltop above Berat, Albania, one of the oldest continuously inhabited castles in the world with origins in the 4th century BC. The castle walls enclose an entire living village of around 300 residents, Byzantine churches, and an Ottoman mosque. Berat itself is a UNESCO World Heritage City renowned for its extraordinary ensemble of Byzantine, Ottoman, and Albanian vernacular architecture, earning it the name 'City of a Thousand Windows.'
