Dubai is a strong family destination when the route respects heat, distances, and mall-based logistics. This 3-day plan combines headline sights, indoor attractions, beaches, and one desert experience, with summer and rainy-day backups built in.
Recommended Length
Three days is enough for a first visit if you focus on Downtown, the coast, Old Dubai, and one desert outing. Families with younger children should stretch the same plan to 4-5 days.
Budget Range
A mid-range family trip usually costs AED 450-900 per adult per day before hotels, depending on ticket choices. Budget AED 60-120 per person for daily transport if using Metro, taxis, and short ride-hailing trips; AED 80-180 for casual meals; AED 150-450 for major paid attractions. Desert safaris commonly range from about US$45 to US$90 per adult for shared evening tours, with premium or private options costing more.
Getting Around
Use the Dubai Metro for airport, Downtown, Dubai Marina, and Mall of the Emirates corridors. Buy and top up a Nol card at stations. Taxis or ride-hailing are still useful for beaches, hotel-to-desert pickups, and late evenings. Do not underestimate driving time between Downtown, Palm Jumeirah, and Old Dubai.
Day 1: Downtown Dubai and Air-Conditioned Landmarks
Start at Dubai Mall in the late morning rather than walking outdoors. Use the mall as your base for Dubai Aquarium views, restaurants, shopping, and the indoor link toward Burj Khalifa.
Book Burj Khalifa timed entry for late afternoon or early evening if visibility is good. The main observation levels 124 and 125 are enough for most families; premium levels cost more and are best for special occasions.
End with the Dubai Fountain area and an early dinner. If the outdoor heat is intense, watch briefly and move back indoors.
Day 2: Old Dubai, Creek and Marina
Go early to Al Fahidi, Dubai Creek, and the Gold and Spice Souk area before the day heats up. Use an abra ride for a short classic crossing and keep the Old Dubai section to 2-3 hours with children.
Move indoors for lunch, then choose one coastal plan: Dubai Marina promenade at sunset, JBR beach, or Palm Jumeirah views. Families who want a paid water attraction can swap in Aquaventure or a shorter marina boat experience.
Day 3: Desert Safari or Full Indoor Day
In cooler months, book an afternoon/evening desert safari with hotel pickup, dune drive, sandboarding, camel photo stop, and dinner camp. Choose operators with clear pickup times, child policies, and insurance. If anyone gets motion sick, ask for a gentler dune drive or skip dune bashing.
In summer or bad weather, replace the desert with Ski Dubai, Dubai Frame, Museum of the Future if tickets are available, or a relaxed Mall of the Emirates / Downtown day. The point is not to force an outdoor plan when the weather is working against you.

Food and Local Practicalities

Dress modestly in malls and older districts, especially outside beach zones. Public intoxication and aggressive public behavior are serious mistakes; keep the trip family-friendly and respectful.
Visa and Entry Notes
Visa rules vary by passport. Many travelers can enter visa-free or receive a visa on arrival, while others need to apply in advance. Check current UAE entry rules before booking and carry proof of onward travel and accommodation if required.
