Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu is the legendary 15th-century Inca citadel perched on a ridge above the Urubamba River valley in the Peruvian Andes, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Built at the height of the Inca Empire and abandoned a century later, it was unknown to the outside world until Hiram Bingham's 1911 expedition. Its terraced agricultural platforms, temples, and palaces, set against a backdrop of misty mountain peaks, make it South America's most iconic archaeological site.
