Johnston Canyon
Johnston Canyon is one of the most popular hiking destinations in Banff National Park, Alberta, a dramatic limestone gorge carved by the Bow River where a well-maintained catwalk trail hugs the canyon walls above rushing waterfalls. The lower falls (1.1 km) and upper falls (2.7 km) can be reached year-round; in winter the frozen falls create a spectacular ice climbing venue. The canyon is also the site of a nesting colony of black swifts, one of the few known breeding sites for this elusive bird.
