Hallgrímskirkja

Hallgrímskirkja

Hallgrímskirkja is Reykjavik's most striking landmark, a 74.5-meter Lutheran church designed by architect Guðjón Samúelsson whose basalt column-inspired façade was inspired by Iceland's volcanic landscape. Construction began in 1945 and took 41 years to complete; today its tower offers the best panoramic views of Reykjavik and the surrounding bay and mountains. The church's simplicity and geometric drama make it one of the 20th century's most distinctive religious buildings.
