Edinburgh Old Town

Edinburgh Old Town

Edinburgh Old Town is the medieval half of Edinburgh's UNESCO World Heritage City, a dramatic mile-long spine of volcanic rock dominated by the castle at one end and the Palace of Holyroodhouse at the other, with centuries of Scottish history compressed into a labyrinth of closes, wynds, and tenements. The Royal Mile connects the two royal residences through the heart of the old city, passing the High Kirk of St Giles and Grassmarket along the way. The August Fringe Festival transforms the Old Town into the world's greatest arts festival.
