Dejima

Dejima

Dejima is a historic fan-shaped artificial island in Nagasaki Bay, built in 1636 as the sole European trading post permitted during Japan's 200-year Edo period isolation. Dutch traders of the VOC were the only Europeans allowed in Japan during this period. Today the restored site includes reconstructed Dutch warehouse buildings and exhibits offering a fascinating window into this unique episode of Japanese and global trade history.
