Cabo de São Vicente at the southwestern tip of Portugal is the most southwesterly point of mainland Europe, a dramatic 75-meter-high promontory of black basalt cliffs battered by Atlantic swell, capped by a working lighthouse and a 16th-century Franciscan convent ruin. The cape was a crucial navigational landmark for ships rounding Europe into the Mediterranean and beyond during the Age of Discovery, and a place of almost mythological significance in Portuguese maritime history. Sunsets here, with the Atlantic stretching to the horizon, are among the most dramatic in Europe.

Fortaleza de Sagres

Fortaleza de Sagres (Sagres Fort) is a dramatic promontory fortress at the southwestern tip of the Algarve, occupying the windswept headland where Henry the Navigator is said to have established his legendary school of navigation that launched the Age of Exploration. Benagil Cave
