Amano Iwato Shrine

Amano Iwato Shrine is a revered Shinto sanctuary in Takachiho, Miyazaki Prefecture, dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu. According to mythology, Amaterasu hid in this cave, plunging the world into darkness before being lured out. Visitors cross a rope bridge to reach Ama-no-Yasukawara, a riverside cave filled with thousands of stone cairns left by worshippers. The surrounding cedar forest adds to the deeply spiritual atmosphere.
