Hanamiyama Park

Hanamiyama Park in Fukushima City, Tōhoku, is famous for one of Japan's most spectacular spring blossom panoramas — a hillside covered in cherry, plum, apricot, forsythia, and magnolia blossoms that bloom simultaneously each April in an extraordinary multicolored display. The park's walking trails wind through this floral tapestry with views of Adatara Mountain, making it a world-class hanami (blossom viewing) destination that remains relatively undiscovered by international visitors.

Matsushima Bay

Matsushima Bay is one of Japan's three officially designated scenic views (Nihon Sankei), a tranquil bay near Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture dotted with approximately 260 pine-covered islands of varying sizes. The ancient poet Matsuo Bashō was reportedly so moved by its beauty that he was left speechless. The islands, ranging from tiny rock outcrops to substantial wooded islets, can be explored by short boat cruise, while the surrounding area features important Zen temples and gardens.

Zuigan-ji Temple

Zuigan-ji is a National Treasure of Japan and the chief Rinzai Zen temple of the Tohoku region, located in the coastal town of Matsushima in Miyagi Prefecture. Founded in 828 CE and reconstructed in its current form in 1609 by the powerful warlord Date Masamune, the temple complex features elaborately decorated main halls with stunning sliding door paintings by the Kano school of art. The approach through a solemn cedar forest past cliffside caves used as meditation cells by ancient monks creates a profound spiritual atmosphere.

Kitakami Tenshochi Park

Kitakami Tenshochi Park along the Kitakami River in Iwate Prefecture is one of Japan's top 100 cherry blossom viewing spots, featuring a 2-kilometer promenade lined with approximately 10,000 cherry trees. During the cherry blossom season each spring, the park hosts the Kitakami Tenshochi Cherry Blossom Festival, featuring traditional Michinoku Enburi folk dance performances and lantern-lit evening illuminations. The sight of cherry blossoms reflecting on the river makes it a quintessential Tohoku spring experience.
