Jigokudani Monkey Park
Jigokudani Monkey Park near Yamanouchi in Nagano Prefecture is world famous for the Japanese macaques (snow monkeys) that descend from the forested mountains each winter to warm themselves in the park's natural hot spring pool. The sight of these wild primates soaking contentedly in steaming water amid snowfall, with reddened faces and unconcerned expressions, is one of wildlife photography's most iconic images. The 1.6-km snow-covered forest walk to the park is part of the experience.
