Al-Qarawiyyin University
Al-Qarawiyyin University in Fes, Morocco, is recognized by UNESCO and the Guinness World Records as the oldest existing and continually operating university in the world, founded in 859 AD by Fatima al-Fihri, a Muslim woman. The institution has educated countless scholars, including the geographer Al-Idrisi, and has maintained its curriculum of Islamic studies, grammar, and rhetoric for over 1,150 years. The attached mosque is one of North Africa's most important Islamic monuments.
