Gnaoua World Music Festival
Held annually in Essaouira, generally in June, the Gnaoua World Music Festival celebrates Morocco’s Gnawa musical tradition while creating encounters with jazz, pop, rock and contemporary world-music artists. Gnawa communities have roots in West Africa’s Sahel, and their music was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019. Across roughly four days, concerts and musical exchanges animate Essaouira, with many performances traditionally free to attend. Visitors can explore the Atlantic port and its UNESCO-listed medina alongside the music. Check the current official dates, programme and access arrangements before travelling.
