Day 1

  1. Avenue of the Baobabs Morondava

The Avenue of the Baobabs (Allée des Baobabs) near Morondava in western Madagascar is one of Africa's most spectacular natural landmarks, a dirt road flanked by around 20 ancient baobab trees up to 800 years old and 30 meters tall standing like monuments against the open sky. At sunrise and sunset, when the light turns golden and the silhouettes of the massive trunks are reflected in the seasonal ponds below, the scene is among the most photographed in Africa. The trees are remnants of a tropical dry forest that once surrounded them.
