Tongariro Alpine Crossing

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is New Zealand's most famous single-day hike, a 19.4-km traverse across the volcanic landscape of Tongariro National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The route crosses the active volcanic plateau between Mount Ngauruhoe (Mount Doom in the Lord of the Rings films) and Mount Tongariro, passing vivid Emerald Lakes, Red Crater, and South Crater. On a clear day the views across the central North Island are extraordinary.
