Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach
Reynisfjara is Iceland's most dramatic black sand beach, a sweeping expanse of jet-black volcanic sand near Vík on the south coast, backed by towering hexagonal basalt columns called Reynisdranger. The sea stacks — home to nesting puffins in summer — and the deafening crash of North Atlantic waves create an elemental, otherworldly atmosphere. Warning signs remind visitors of the notorious sneaker waves that have claimed lives here; the beach is best enjoyed from a safe distance.
