Nachi Falls

Nachi Falls is Japan's tallest single-drop waterfall at 133 meters, cascading in a single magnificent plume from the mountains of the Kii Peninsula into a sacred pool below. Revered as a deity and protected within the grounds of the Kumano Nachi Taisha shrine, the falls are framed by the shrine's vermilion three-story pagoda to create one of Japan's most iconic and photographed views. As part of the Kumano Kodo UNESCO World Heritage pilgrimage network, Nachi Falls has been an object of religious worship for over 1,400 years.

Hayatama Taisha Shrine

Hayatama Taisha is one of the three Grand Shrines of Kumano, alongside Hongu Taisha and Nachi Taisha, that form the sacred heart of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage network. Located in Shingu at the mouth of the Kumano River, this ancient Shinto shrine was a place of worship for emperors and samurai lords for over a millennium and is closely connected to Japan's primordial creation mythology. The surrounding sacred forest and the Asuka Shrine's large camphor tree create a powerfully atmospheric setting.
