Douro Valley Wine Region
The Douro Valley Wine Region is Portugal's most celebrated viticultural area, a terraced river valley where ancient schist stone walls sustain vine-covered terraces that rise from the Douro River to skyline ridges. The valley's 250,000 hectares of vines produce Port wine from 80 permitted grape varieties in a tradition going back to at least Roman times. The harvest season in September-October, when workers gather grapes by hand on the precipitous slopes, is one of Europe's most spectacular agricultural traditions.
