Palace of Knossos

The Palace of Knossos is the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete and one of the most important in the Aegean, the legendary labyrinthine palace of the Minoans — Europe's first advanced civilization — dating to around 1700-1400 BCE. The site is associated with the myth of the Minotaur and the legendary King Minos, whose architect Daedalus was said to have built the famous labyrinth. The partially reconstructed palace features remarkable frescoes, elaborate plumbing systems, and multi-story buildings that attest to a sophisticated civilization that predated Classical Greece by 1,000 years.

Sightseeing

Chania Old Town

Chania Old Town is one of Crete's most enchanting historic districts, a labyrinth of Venetian and Ottoman architecture surrounding a beautiful crescent-shaped harbor. Colorful lighthouse, narrow alleyways with boutique shops and tavernas, a covered market, and a former mosque reflect layers of Minoan, Venetian, and Ottoman heritage. The harbor front at sunset, with its reflected lights shimmering in the water, is among the most romantic scenes in the Mediterranean.
