Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves

Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves

The Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves are a complex of Buddhist cave temples carved into the Flaming Mountains of Xinjiang, China. Dating from the 5th to 14th centuries, these Silk Road caves were once adorned with spectacular murals depicting Buddha figures and celestial beings. Much original artwork was removed by European explorers in the early 20th century, yet the remaining fragments and dramatic desert setting remain compelling historical monuments.
