Must-See Highlights

Mountain lake

Valley of the Moon

This incredible lunar landscape features dramatic salt formations, sand dunes, and amazing eroded rock structures that look exactly like the moon's surface. The sunset here is absolutely breathtaking โ€“ don't miss it!

Geysers del Tatio

Wake up early for this one โ€“ you need to be here before sunrise to see the geysers at their most active when the steam is dramatically visible against the cold morning air. It's the largest geyser field in the southern hemisphere.

Miscanti and Miรฑiques Lakes

These stunning turquoise high-altitude lakes sit at over 4,000 meters (13,000 ft) surrounded by volcanoes. The colors are incredible โ€“ bright turquoise water against the red volcanic rock and blue sky. Bring layers, it's cold up here!

Valle Rojo (Red Valley)

The incredible red and orange rock formations create a martian landscape. The hiking here is relatively easy and rewards you with incredible panoramic views of the entire desert valley.

Stargazing

Atacama has some of the clearest and darkest skies in the world. With almost no light pollution, you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye in all its glory. Book a guided stargazing tour โ€“ the local guides are fantastic and they have high-powered telescopes.

Practical Travel Tips

Altitude Acclimatization

  • San Pedro de Atacama is at 2,400m (7,900 ft)
  • Drink plenty of water, take it easy the first day
  • If you feel altitude sickness, rest and drink coca tea (locally available)
  • The higher lakes are at 4,000m+ so be prepared

Weather

  • Daytime: Warm to hot (20-28ยฐC / 68-82ยฐF) even in winter
  • Nighttime: Cold, often below freezing (0-5ยฐC / 32-41ยฐF)
  • Best time to visit: March-May and September-November
  • Summer (December-February) can be extremely hot during the day

Transportation

  • Most travelers fly into Calama then take a shared transfer to San Pedro (about 1.5 hours)
  • Rent a 4x4 if you want to explore independently, but most attractions are easier with guided tours
  • Tours are reasonably priced and pick up/drop off at your accommodation

What to Pack

  • Sunscreen (strong UV at high altitude!)
  • Hat and sunglasses
  • Warm jacket for nights and early mornings
  • Comfortable hiking shoes
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Camera with extra batteries (it's cold early mornings)
